New Releases: September 13th

By Paco McCullough and Terry Cleveland

This week on dvd, we had more than we were properly able to cover. Amongst the titles, an OSCAR winner, a superhero film, and an interesting documentary. Check it out after the jump.

Thor
Thor wasn't the best movie of the summer, or even the best superhero movie (that's Captain America). However, it was a lot of fun when it was focusing on the more fantastic elements. When it switches to its fish out of water comedy and lame love story, it loses a bit. Overall, it was one of the more fun films of the summer and worth a rental.

 Incendies
OSCAR winner Incendies starts out with two twins Jeanne (Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin) and Simon (Maxim Gaudette) who both receive a letter as per their mother’s will that are to be delivered to their brother whom they didn’t know existed and their father who was presumed dead. The rest of the film takes place in the Middle East where the twins search for clues to their mothers past, interspersed with flashbacks from her life. The pacing in the film was a little rough at times because of the length of the flashbacks, but it all fits together in the present as the twins find more info like a good  puzzle. A lot of the imagery in the film is sad at best and horrifically fucked up at worst, I won’t ruin the twist with any plot spoilers but I will say that it took me completely aback. This film is one of the best dramas that I’ve seen in quite some time. I recommend it heartily.

 Conan O'Brien Can't Stop
Conan O’Brian Can’t Stop is a documentary that takes place in the aftermath of the Conan tonight show scandal and the ensuing tour. The early portion of the film takes place in the initial planning stages of Conan’s musical tour, and as a whole is a very rare insight into the early stages of a comedian at his prime.  The real part of the film that stands apart though is the candid look at Conan as he struggles to deal with the crushing disappointment of being tossed aside by NBC, as well as his overwhelming desire to keep moving forward ( hence the title). Overall I liked this film a lot and would recommend it to fans of Conan or anyone who enjoys a good documentary.
