been released. Being one of those few left who dig Anderson’s films
for their personal relevance aside from just their aesthetic

Prometheus (2012) Review

Prometheus, the highly anticipated semi-prequel to Ridley Scott's
classic Alien, is nothing if not ambitious. The film dares to ask
philosophical questions, attempting to be more along the lines of Tarkovsky's films or Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Even the name is more ambitious, evoking
classic Greek mythology instead of flesh-tearing xenomorphs. Perhaps
Icarus would have been a better name, though. Much like that tale,
Prometheus attempts too much, and crashes to the ground as a result.

The Raid: Redemption (2012) Review
"Holy Shit" "Oh my God!" "Fuck, that was awesome!" are just a handful
of phrases I uttered over the course of The Raid: Redemption's hour
and a half running time. Featuring breathtaking stunts and
choreography, an excellent color pallet, great action direction, and a
surprisingly tolerable score by Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park, The Raid:
Redemption is the greatest action film of this generation. Forget Ong
Bak, forget Ip Man- this is the film that should come to exemplify the
resurgence of Asian martial arts films.

Cosmopolis Trailer

There are few filmmakers I love as much as David Cronenberg. He's almost always doing something new and exciting. While not all of his films work, I respect that ability to take such risks. At the same time, I was quite worried when I saw that he was working with Robert Pattison. After watching the trailer, it's become clear that I had no need to worry. Check it out after the jump.

Short Film: Briefcase

A young man opens a briefcase he finds at a gas station. To say where it goes from there would be giving away too much, as this short packs a lot of twists and turns into its five minute runtime. Stylish and gritty, it's a pretty compelling watch. Catch it after the jump.

John Carter of Mars (2012) Review

Edgar Rice Burroughs originally started writing his Barsoom books in the early 1900s. Now, a hundred years later we are now being treated to the film adaptation: John Carter. Unfortunately I have not read the books (yet), but if this movie is any indication--they could be a very marketable new franchise for Disney and one with a fantastic and fun concept.

New Trailer for The Raid

There's a new green-band trailer for The Raid, a film I look forward to more than any other this year. It's less convincing then the previous red-band trailer, but offers a better idea of the plot and some new images of ass kicking. For some reason, they decided to now call it The Raid:Redemption, but whatever. Check it out. I think you'll dig it.

Wrath of the Titans Trailer

I have only met one person ever who admitted to enjoying Clash of the Titans, but unfortunately that film made a ton of money. As we all know, money=sequel, and the second trailer for Wrath of the Titans was released today. I have to say, though, this one actually looks kind of fun, in a brainless, B-movie type of way. We'll find out if that's the case next month. Check out the trailer after the jump.

American Reunion Trailer

Here's the trailer for American Pie number 4 (if you don't count all the direct to dvd spin-offs). As I'm no longer a thirteen year old boy, I have no interest whatsoever in this film. Who knows, maybe some of you have a feeling of nostalgia, having grown up with them. If that's the case, I pity you. Anyways, check it out after the jump.

Bully Trailer

Some of you may have heard about the recent MPAA decision to give the new documentary, Bully, an R-rating for crude language. A documentary about the epidemic of bullying that occurs in our school system, the film was made with the intention of not only sparking debate on the issue, but with the hopes of being shown in classrooms to help discussions on the issue. An R-rating would make this impossible in most districts, and it's unfortunate that the MPAA is unwilling to show kids actually behaving as kids do in school. A trailer for the film was released today, and you can catch it after the jump.

The Bourne Legacy Trailer

The idea of a Bourne movie without Matt Damon struck me as odd as first. Unlike 007, he works outside of the government, so there's no way to replace him and have it make sense. The fix? Don't replace him at all, but begin a new story entirely. I was leery about the idea at first, but I'll be damned if this trailer doesn't make the film look awesome. Pay particular attention to the fire hydrant about halfway through. Here's hoping the film's as good as the trailer.

GI Joe: Retaliation Trailer

This new trailer for GI Joe seems to appeal to the twelve year old in all of us. Ninjas swordfighting on a giant cliff? Bruce Willis machinegunning a house from the backseat of a camaro? While it is possible that this film will be a bunch of fun, my money's on it being a giant turd. Even if that's the case though, this trailer is sorta fun. Check it out.

Amazing Spiderman Trailer

As of yesterday, I was very leery with the idea of a Spiderman reboot, particularly one directed by Marc Webb, whose previous experience was (500) Days of Summer and some music videos for emo bands. The original trailer certainly didn't do any favors, particularly an extended scene that looked like it was from a video game. While the new trailer still has some flaws, for the first time I'm excited about the film. Check out the trailer after the jump.

Things I Don't Understand (2011) Review

Her goal: to learn about things she doesn’t understand: life, death, and the in between. As the film continues you are introduced to her fun roommates and see a glimpse of hope in her eyes as she falls for a bartender who has secrets of his own.

Haywire Review
Steven Soderbergh developed Haywire as an excuse to showcase the talents of Gina Carano, a professional mixed martial artist that Soderbergh caught on tv. Boy does it succeed. Carano is a revelation as Mallory, a military contractor and serious asskicker. Her limited acting range matters little when she's viciously beating Michael Fassbinder or Channing Tatum into submission. Indeed, I left wanting to see a whole lot more of Carano.

Side By Side looks like a great documentary for any film nerd. The debate over Film vs. Digital production has been argued over and over again, but never before in my memory has someone thought to ask the most important figures in modern cinema their thoughts on the subject. And yes, that is Keanu Reeves interviewing them.

Trailer of the Day: Moonrise Kingdom
Love him or hate him, Wes Anderson makes some of the most unique comedies out there. Moonrise Kingdom, his upcoming film, looks to hit all the familiar beats: quirky but lovable story, star-studded cast acting goofy, highly stylized framing, and of course, meticulously selected music.
